THE CHRISTMAS DOVE - by Arlo Nau
The Christmas Dove, in search of peace,
flew first to Athens...Athens, Greece.
Surely there, a gift of the ages,
peace would be found midst Plato's pages.
But peace and reason aren't really friends.
Too oft they work toward opposite ends.
The dove flew on, still gripping its leaf,
the hot sun adding its daily grief.
To Washington it finally came...
there peace, of course, a hollow refrain.
For power and wealth do not peace make,
But greed and conflict they create.
On the dove struggled, now tired and thin.
It stopped for rest at a Beth'lem Inn.
There ling'ring hopes from the distant past
refreshed the dove and its leaf at last.
Forgiveness, joy, still hung in the air
>From God's Son's birth in a stable there.
Peace...pax...paix...shalom
will come to country, world and home
When in the heart it first abounds,
a gift of God in Christ profound.
The olive branch? There's naught about it
Lest from the cross its leaf is sprouted.
